Why eating breakfast prevents weight gain and fatigue

Skipping breakfast makes you more prone to overeating or poor food choices

Breakfast is the easiest meal to skip—mornings are rushed and many people don’t have an appetite when they wake up. Some people even feel nauseous in the morning (which indicates a blood sugar disorder). But if you skip breakfast you may be sabotaging your weight loss efforts, increasing your risk of obesity and blood sugar disorders, and robbing your brain of energy.

Skipping breakfast associated with obesity

Numerous studies show skipping breakfast is associated with higher rates of obesity in both children and adults. Some people erroneously think that by skipping breakfast they consume fewer calories and thus aid weight loss. However, skipping breakfast can set into motion an unhealthy metabolic cascade that eventually leads to excess fat.

Breakfast is the first meal after a long night of fasting. In the absence of food, the body must release stored glucose to fuel the brain or create glucose by breaking down muscle tissue. This process is made possible by stress hormones.

Skipping breakfast when your brain and body are starved for energy exaggerates this stress response, forcing the body to continually pump out stress hormones to fuel the brain. These stress hormones also explain why some people wake up feeling nauseous. Although it seems counter-intuitive, eating can actually relieve that morning nausea by inhibiting the stress response.

The habitual stress response caused by skipping breakfast and other meals promotes weight gain, upsets hormonal balance, causes inflammation, hinders brain function, and can lead to symptoms such as migraines, depression, mood swings, shakiness, lightheadedness, brain fog, sleep disorders, and more. Eating meals high in sugar and carbohydrates also contributes to this problem by causing energy to continually spike and crash throughout the day.

Eating breakfast is an important strategy when it comes to preventing weight gain and fatigue.

Skipping breakfast can increase your chances of overindulging or making poor food choices later in the day. When your energy is crashing and your brain is starving for fuel, downing a caramel latte or package of mini donuts suddenly seems unavoidable. A well-fueled brain is better equipped to make healthier choices and not succumb to a mad grab for the nearest source of quick energy (for which the American food industry seems to be designed).

A recent study validated this tendency, showing participants who skipped breakfast were more likely to seek out high-calorie junk foods and that dieters who skip meals are more prone to gain weight over the long run. Their brain scans showed skipping meals stimulated the brain in a way that made high-calorie foods seem more appealing. Those who skipped breakfast also ate about 20 percent more at lunch.

Breakfast keeps body and brain on an even keel

Breakfast should emphasize healthy proteins and fat (avoid sugary, starchy breakfasts) to start the day on an even keel and maximize brain function. Eat frequently enough to avoid blood sugar crashes, and include protein, healthy fat, and fiber (vegetables) with every meal to sustain energy and prevent fatigue throughout the day.

6 Tips to Savvy Midlife Personal Style

We’ve all done it at one point or another. You open your closet, sift through hangers of clothes, and think—“I’ve got nothing to wear.

How is that possible? Your closet is full. And yet, nothing seems to fit your body, your personality or your mood anymore. Maybe you’re a corporate professional or a solo business owner who has to dress her best for meetings, but your style and wardrobe isn’t keeping up. You may be questioning whether certain trends are right for your body, or wondering which brands and designers to buy.

Perhaps you’ve fallen out of the fashion cycle, with no clue how to stop feeling frumpy. Or like most of us in midlife, maybe your body has changed, your hair and skin have changed—and your clothes just don’t fit like they used to. They don’t fit your shape, and they don’t fit how you want to feel inside.

If this sounds familiar, take heart: there is hope for feeling fabulous in your clothes—and it doesn’t necessarily take a shopping spree to do it!

I recently spent some time with my friend Mary Lou who is a stylist, color and image consultant. I asked her: What are the some easy things women can do to look incredible?

She said it’s as simple as wearing the right colors in the right combinations.

Wanting to know more, I packed a suitcase full of my go-to clothes and took it to Mary Lou’s office. Together we sorted through the pile, and within minutes, she was combining pieces of clothing that I had never thought of wearing together.

She showed me ways I could use what I had to create new outfits. She also showed me how to bring out the best colors for me—and bring out some colors in my clothes I didn’t even know were there.

In one hour with my stylist, I walked out with what feels like a brand new wardrobe—without buying anything new!

In addition, Mary Lou recommended some “must buys” next time I do shop that will add more sparkle to my style. (Hint: she told me copper shoes could be my next secret weapon—I already bought a great pair.)

If there’s one thing I learned from Mary Lou, it’s that real fashion and style is possible no matter what age you are. You can look good and feel good about how you dress. But you just need to be savvy!

Here are some tips to get started:

1) The best place to start your style update is in your own closet. Your clothes should reflect the current you (not the you from five or ten years ago) in terms of lifestyle, body shape and style. Pick out some of your favorite outfits from the clothes you have, and notice what you feel best in, based on your body’s architecture, skin and hair color, and the textures and fabrics.

2) Determine what “look” you like. Do you like a classic or executive style? Are you drawn to a more natural look, or do you prefer to be dramatic? If you focus on your own personal style, you can build a consistent wardrobe that meets your needs, and that’s easy to wear.

3) Find out what colors are best for you. Even if you’ve had your colors done in the past—it’s worth it to talk with a professional color consultant, as your colors may have changed. Keep in mind: The colors you choose can influence how people feel when talking with you. If you’re in a networking situation, it’s important to wear colors in a certain way to bring out your best features—for example, wearing colors close to your face or away from your face, in your jewelry, or in your shoes can brighten your skin, eyes and smile.

4) Pay attention to your neckline. Necklines can accentuate your face, bringing attention to your best features—or not. There are ways to make your neck look longer, thinner, more authoritative and more persuasive. Here’s an idea: to lengthen your face, try a V-neck or open-collar blouse. Throw on an interesting scarf to soften your neckline and bring color (the right color) to your cheeks.

5) Get a professional bra fitting and if you need to try some “shapewear”. As we age, our body parts can go south. The right-fitted bra can change everything about how you look—giving you a more attractive and proportional body balance. And today’s body shapers target any area of your body that needs a lift—your back, your butt, your thighs, muffin top and stomach. Unlike the girdles of yesterday, these shapers are comfortable enough to wear all day.

6) Now make your personal style work for you! Put the clothes that fit your style back in the closet, and pile up the rest to give to a charity or resale shop. And promise yourself that you will only buy your according to your personal style from now on.
